Fuji apples are one of the most iconic and sought after fruits in the world. Originating in Japan in the late 1930’s, it has garnered renowned for its robust and crisp taste. The apple has a relatively high sugar content compared to its compatriots, which is most noticeable in the skin, which is much sweeter than other variants. With refrigeration, however, the apples can remain fresh for nearly an entire year.
The Fuji apple is a clone bred from two American apple strains; the Red Delicious and the Virginia Ralls Genet. Because of its genetic makeup,
the apple can be encouraged to mutate by introducing alternative genetic material. This process has produced several well-loved varieties of the fruit, including the so-called Grapple – a Fuji apple with the flavor of a Concord grape.
Due to its popularity, the apple is heavily produced via conventional farming methods. These methods allow farmers to keep up with demand, but at the cost of the fruits overall nutritional value. These methods have also been known to be damaging to the environment and, in some cases, prevent farmers from replanting crops because of depleted soil.
Organic farming has been gaining popularity in recent years. While yields are generally lower when compared with more conventional methods, the fruit produced is often more pure. Organic Fuji apples house higher levels of flavinoids, a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off illness and certain cancers. The apples are also known to help lower cholesterol and protect skin from sun damage.
