When it comes to organic fruit, navel oranges are one of the best options available. Oranges has long held a special place in the hearts of fruit fanatics and culinary professionals for its rich and light flavor. Of the myriad variety of oranges available today, navel oranges are, perhaps, the most recognizable. Interestingly, the discovery of this fruit was entirely by accident.
The fruit derives from a rare mutation that spurs the growth of an additional orange attached to the original. This conjoined feature was first discovered between 1810 and 1820, when an orange tree was planted at a monastery in Brazil. The orange got its name from the uncanny resemblance it held to the human body. The oranges, however, do not produce any seeds, and thus can only be reproduced by applying cuttings from the birthing tree to other citrus trees.
Oranges are well known for their high vitamin C content and can be used to help the body fight off infection. Processed versions of the fruit – those grown
at industrial farms or otherwise modified in some way – have significantly lower nutritional value than those grown through organic methods. Organic growing allows the oranges to develop naturally and can be ingested without fear of introducing potentially harmful chemicals to the body.
Organic growing is also environmentally friendly. While organic farming methods often yield less produce, the soil maintains much of its nutrients and fortitude after harvest, allowing farmers to quickly replant their next crop. Organic farms are much more capable of sustaining a diverse ecosystem, allowing a variety of insects and animals, as well as other plant life, to thrive in the environment.
As with any ecosystem, those fostered by organic farmland are subject to the food chain. Carnivorous predators hunt small animals that feed on the crops, and these small animals hunt insects that could damage the crops. This symbiotic relationship removes the need for synthetic pesticides, allowing the produce to grow without danger of contamination.
